How to put a custody schedule in your calendar
- Pick the rotation from your parenting plan and the week it starts.
- Type both parents' names and, if you like, your child's name. Check the preview against your plan.
- Choose whether the file is for both parents or just one, and press Download .ics file.
- Import the file into a new, separate calendar (in Google Calendar: Settings, Add calendar, Create new calendar, then Import & export). If the schedule changes, delete that calendar and import a new file.
- Send the page link to the other parent: it opens with the same rotation, start date and names.
Questions
- What is a custody calendar?
- It shows which parent the children are with on each night. Most parenting plans use a repeating rotation, such as 2-2-3 or week on/week off, so the whole calendar follows from the rotation and its start date.
- How do I add a custody schedule to Google Calendar?
- Make the file on this page, then in Google Calendar on a computer open Settings, Import & export, choose the file and pick a calendar. Every stay appears as an all-day event that repeats with the rotation.
- Can both parents use the same file?
- Yes. The default file has both parents' time, labeled with their names. Choose one parent under File for to get a file with only their time.
- Does the schedule count days or nights?
- Nights. Each day on the calendar belongs to the parent the children sleep at that night, which is how most parenting plans and courts count time.
- What if our exchange day isn't Monday?
- The rotations here start on Monday. If your exchanges fall on other days, pick the closest rotation and edit the events in your calendar, or tell us at support so we can add it.
- Is this custody calendar free?
- Yes. It is free, you don't need an account, and nothing you type is saved.
These are calendar layouts, not legal advice. Your parenting plan or court order decides your schedule.
Keeping track of school and activities too?
Calendar Vision reads school calendars, sports schedules, flyers and emails and puts every date in your calendar, so both households see the same plan.
